Secret Santa rules
Secret Santa has almost no rules, which is why every group argues about them. Here is a complete, sensible set you can copy into your group chat, plus the most popular variations.
The basic rules
- Everyone draws one name. You buy for that person only. Nobody draws themselves.
- Agree a budget. Set both a maximum and, ideally, a minimum so gifts feel fair. Say "$20 to $25" rather than "around $25".
- Set the exchange date. Also set a deadline for wishlists, usually a week after the draw.
- Keep it secret. Do not tell anyone who you drew until the exchange.
- Wrap and label with the recipient's name only. No giver name on the tag.
- Open gifts together. One at a time is more fun than all at once.
- Reveal (optional). After opening, the recipient guesses their Santa. The giver confirms.

Etiquette
- Buy something for the person, not something you would want. Read their wishlist.
- Do not go far over budget; it embarrasses the person who followed the rules.
- Gift cards are fine for coworkers, a bit lazy for friends.
- If you drew someone you dislike, you still buy them a proper gift. That is the game.
Popular variations
White Elephant (Yankee Swap, Dirty Santa)
Nobody draws names. Everyone brings one wrapped gift. Players take turns either opening a new gift or stealing an already-opened one. A gift can usually be stolen only two or three times. Funny and cheap gifts work best. Because there is no draw, you do not need a generator for this, but many groups run a Secret Santa and a White Elephant.
Kris Kringle
The Australian, Irish and Scottish name for Secret Santa. Same rules. Often played in offices with a lower budget.
Secret Snowflake
A non-religious name for the same game, common in schools and workplaces. Sometimes played as a week of small anonymous gifts before the final reveal.
Amigo Invisible / Amigo Secreto
The Spanish and Latin American version. Traditionally includes a written clue or a poem with the gift. Available in our Spanish generator.
Wichteln

Themed Secret Santa
Add a rule like "something handmade", "something from a local shop", "a book you loved" or "a gift starting with the recipient's initial". Put the theme in the organizer message so it appears on everyone's page.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good Secret Santa budget?
$15 to $30 for offices and friend groups, $30 to $50 for families that used to buy everyone a gift. Choose an amount the least well-off participant is comfortable with.
Do you reveal who your Secret Santa was?
Most groups reveal after the gifts are opened, either by guessing or by the giver stepping forward. Some offices keep it secret forever. Decide before the draw.
What if someone drops out after the draw?
If nobody has opened their link yet, redraw. If they have, ask the person who drew the dropout to buy for the person the dropout had drawn, and remove the dropout from the exchange.
Can I do Secret Santa with 3 people?
Yes, three is the minimum. With three people everyone can guess their Santa quickly, so four or more is better for suspense.
